A Better French Press
Use a coarse grind, hot water, and a consistent ratio. Steep for about four minutes, break the crust, skim if desired, then plunge slowly and serve promptly.
French press brewing is approachable and produces a cup with more oils and texture than many paper-filter methods. Start with a coarse, even grind and a common baseline of roughly 1 gram of coffee to 15 grams of water. Water just off the boil works for many coffees, though very dark roasts may benefit from slightly cooler water.
Add water, stir gently, and steep for around four minutes. Break the surface crust, remove foam if you prefer a cleaner cup, then press slowly. Pour the coffee out rather than leaving it in the press, where it can continue extracting and become harsh. Adjust the ratio and steep time to suit your taste.
